Weymouth In Old Postcards and Photographs
Gloucester Row circa 1890s
An interesting view of Gloucester Row from the mid 1890s. Stacies Hotel has been demolished and the building of the The Royal Hotel and it’s adjoining Arcade has yet to commence. Beyond is The Gloucester Hotel, formerly Gloucester Lodge and home of George 3rd when in Weymouth. Anyone who has read Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Trumpet Major’ will be familiar with the colourful rituals as the King took to the waters opposite.
Gloucester Row from the sea, probably sometime in the 1930s, Weymouth’s premier seafront hotels in all their pre-war pomp
