Boats For Hire Circa 1950
The beach opposite the Victoria and Belvedere Terraces. The gent in the white shorts looks very much like Tony Bugler. Whose family ran the Kelly’s site for many years. I was one of many local lads who, each evening, would help Tony and his brother carry and secure the boats and canoes away from the high water mark. When older I would also stand on the promenade trying top persuade passing holidaymakers to hire a boat or canoe for an hour or half hour. The rowing boats were beautiful clinker boats as were many of the canoes. Out of season they were stored in a warehouse off Charles St.
